Common Gas and Propane Furnace Repairs

Most gas furnace breakdowns trace back to a handful of parts. The hot surface igniter can crack and stop lighting the burners. A dirty flame sensor can shut the burners off seconds after they light. The inducer motor, pressure switch and limit switch can all fail and stop the furnace for safety.

Other common repairs include blower motors and capacitors, control boards, gas valves and thermostats. High-efficiency furnaces also have a condensate drain, trap and sometimes a pump, and a clog or a frozen drain line is one of the most common winter no-heat calls we see.

Oil and Electric Furnace Repairs

Oil furnaces need their own kind of care. We repair and service oil burners, including nozzles, oil filters, pumps, ignition transformers, cad cells and primary controls, so your furnace lights reliably and burns clean. If your oil furnace is getting older, we can also talk through converting to gas or a heat pump.

Electric furnaces are simpler but still fail. We replace burned-out heating elements, sequencers, relays and blower motors, and check the wiring and breakers that feed them.

Signs Your Furnace Needs Repair

No heat or cold air

The blower runs but the air from the vents isn’t warm.

Short cycling

The furnace turns on and off every few minutes.

Won’t turn on

Nothing happens when the thermostat calls for heat.

Strange noises

Squealing, grinding, banging or a loud boom at startup.

Blinking lights

A flashing code on the control board means the furnace has found a fault.

Burning smells or a yellow flame

Burners should burn blue. If you smell gas, leave the house and call your gas utility first.

Quick Checks Before You Call

These simple checks sometimes get the heat back on. If they don’t, give us a call.

Thermostat

Set to Heat, a few degrees above room temperature, with fresh batteries.

Furnace switch and breaker

The switch near the furnace is on, and no breaker has tripped.

Filter

Replace it if it’s dirty. A clogged filter can make the furnace overheat and shut off.

Furnace door

The blower door must be fully closed, or a safety switch keeps the furnace off.

Condensate drain

On high-efficiency furnaces, check that the drain line isn’t clogged or frozen.

Furnace Safety and Carbon Monoxide

A cracked heat exchanger or a blocked vent can let carbon monoxide into your home, and you can’t see or smell it. That’s why every furnace repair includes a safety check of the burners, venting and heat exchanger. Make sure you have working carbon monoxide detectors near bedrooms and on every floor.

If your carbon monoxide alarm goes off, leave the house and call 911 from outside. Once it’s safe, we’ll find and fix the cause.

Repair or Replace Your Furnace?

There are numerous factors to consider. A BOSH technician can help you weigh a repair against a replacement.

Age

Most furnaces last 15 to 20 years. Past that, replacement often makes more sense.

Repair cost

If a repair costs a large share of a new furnace, put the money toward a replacement.

Repair history

Two or more major repairs in a few years usually means more are coming.

Safety

A cracked heat exchanger usually means it’s time to replace the furnace.

Parts for older or discontinued furnaces can cost more and take longer to get.

Access

Furnaces in attics or tight closets take more time to work on.
